25th wedding anniversary in Greece
We celebrated our silver jubilee in Greece last week. It was everything we wished for – relaxing, connecting, romantic, fun, and steeped in history. Exploring ancient ruins, enjoying Greek meals, and watching sunsets over the Aegean Sea made it a special experience.
However, while our time in Greece was a perfect backdrop for our anniversary, I wouldn’t return. Mykonos felt a bit too touristy and lacked the cultural resonance I seek when I travel abroad. It felt like an Instagram hologram. We learned from our taxi drivers that locals don’t live in Mykonos, and most of the hotel workers were bussed in from Athens for the season.
Don’t get me wrong, the place is gorgeous. The white buildings carved into centuries-old rocks, the blue and white facade, the indescribable Aegean Sea – all of it is chef’s kiss. But you can’t help feeling like it’s a Hollywood set somehow. Greece definitely affirmed my attraction to local culture and traditions when I travel.
Incidentally, our stay at the five star hotel Anax Resort and Spa made our time in Mykonos feel so luxurious and calming. I’d highly recommend a stay there.
