Personal style and confidence: Part two of six
What are two or three adjectives that describe your personal style? I posed this question to a few people. One said: “aging punk rocker.” She owns a cool vintage store in DC which I frequent monthly. I’ve been going there for several years and she definitely gives aging gracefully punk rocker with her bold black glasses, vintage leather jacket and skinny jeans. The other person is someone who sells raw honey at the farmer’s market. She said, “chic bohemian.” Definitely her vibe with her flowy dresses and classic loafers. Both people were quick to sum up their style. They said it confidently and unapologetically.
Can you articulate your personal style in three words? It’s okay if you can’t. I just recently crystallized my personal style in three words: simple, elevated and modern.

Getting clear about my three style adjectives has increased my self confidence around my fashion decisions and purchases. I use to think I wasn’t stylish and creative because I always leaned towards classic, simple, “boring” style choices. I envied my friends who could wear flowy Farm Rio dresses, I felt guilty for not feeling fabulous wearing Ankara Ghanaian prints. Now I know, the billowy, colorful patterns just didn’t make me feel aligned and that’s okay.
Nowadays, I find myself knowing exactly what I want and not falling into the trend trap or the overconsumption swirl. I show up to key meetings and events with ease and confidence because my clothing pieces make me feel limitless which in turn increase my confidence and executive presence quotient.
Run, don’t walk…articulate your three personal style adjectives. Ensure that the next clothing purchases you make meet the markers for those three adjectives.
